Supervisor Evaluations

1The Supervisor Evaluation


  1. From the homepage, in the Awaiting Your Action section, open the “Manager Evaluation: XXXX Annual Performance Review…” task.
    • Tip: You can also access the task by clicking the Inbox icon in the top-right corner of the homepage.
  2. Click Get Started on the Complete Manager Evaluation screen.

To review the employee’s job responsibilities:

  1. Click the “View Related Information” icon in the sidebar.
    • A pop-up will open displaying job responsibilities.
    • Optionally, while the job responsibilities are open, click the gear icon, then Download to Excel to export for review.
  2. Discuss any needed changes with your HR business partner.
    • Note: your work is automatically saved; you can return later if the process times out.
Apply a Rating:
  1. Scroll to Manager Summary and select a rating for how well the employee executed their job responsibilities.
  2. The Rating Description appears below the field. For guidance, see the Five Tier Performance Rating Scale [pdf].
  3. Click Next when complete.

Tip: To view an employee’s job description, type "Generate Job Description" in the search field in Workday. You can then export it to a PDF or Excel file to review.

  1. Review all employee goals for progress and impact.
  2. To add a goal, click Add.
  3. To remove a goal, click Remove (caution: this deletes the goal permanently).
  4. Select a rating to assess the employee's progress toward their goals.
  5. Click Next when complete.
  1. Review all core competencies.
  2. Select a rating for how the employee demonstrates these competencies.
  3. Click Next when complete.

  1. Review the employee’s self-evaluation in Employee Summary.
    Select an Overall Performance Rating that aligns with the ratings you entered for Job Responsibilities, Goals and Competencies.
  2. Provide comments summarizing the employee’s overall performance.
    • Note: The overall performance rating may be reviewed during the calibration process for organizations that participate in calibration. The overall rating is also used within the merit module and serves as a factor in determining the associated recommended merit range when merit is available.
  3. Click Next when complete.
  1. Review all sections of the supervisor evaluation carefully.
    • Options:
      • Send Back – return to the employee for revisions.
      • Save for Later – save progress in your inbox.
      • Submit – finalize the evaluation.
  2. After submission, a "Success! Event submitted" pop-up displays.
  3. Click View Details, expand Details and Process, then Done to return to your inbox.

2Calibrate and Update Ratings

The calibration process ensures consistency across ratings. Calibration is completed at the discretion of division leadership.  If participating, please work with your HR business partner for department-specific instructions. 

The following sections review the system steps in Workday.

  1. Log in to , open your Inbox, then the Calibrate Team: Performance Calibration task.
    • Optionally, use Hide Workers to conceal employee information.
  2. Use the grid view below Actions to move employees to the calibrated performance rating.

  3. Alternatively, select the list view and adjust an employee's performance rating using the dropdown in the Placement column.
  4. Once complete, click Actions, then Submit Calibration.
  5. Click Done to return to your inbox.
  1. If your staff member’s rating changed during calibration, you will receive the Confirm Performance Review Ratings for Manager Evaluation task in your inbox.
  2. Scroll down and click Continue where I left off, then Get Started.
  3. Navigate through Job Responsibilities, Goals, Competencies and Overall, updating ratings and comments as needed.
  4. Ensure the Overall Rating matches the Calibrated Rating.
  5. Click Submit to finalize the update.
    • Note: Errors will appear if ratings do not match the calibrated rating.

3Release and Print Evaluations


  1. In your inbox, open the "Hold performance review until discussed with employee" task in your inbox.
  2. This releases the evaluation to the employee after the annual performance discussion.
  1. Navigate to the Employee's profile, Performance tab, and click Create New PDF next to the [Current Year] review.
  2. Choose Wait or Notify Me Later.
  3. Access PDFs later via Workday notifications (bell icon, top right).

4Monitor Review Progress

  1. Log in to , search Employee Reviews, then open the report.
  2. Select the top-level Organization, check Include Subordinate Organizations, choose [Current Year] Annual Performance Review, then click OK.
    • Status Definitions:
      • Complete Self Evaluation – employee hasn’t submitted.
      • Complete Manager Evaluation – supervisor hasn’t submitted.
      • Consolidated Approval by Talent Administrator – review submitted for calibration.
      • Manager Rating – pre-calibration rating.
    • Tip: Export to Excel for detailed tracking.
