Prescription Plans
Carnegie Mellon prescription coverage through CVS Caremark provides access to numerous chain and independent pharmacies, in addition to mail order service for maintenance medication. See the Prescription Coverage Comparison Chart for plan details.
Eligibility
You must be full-time benefits eligible (37.5 scheduled hours per week) or part-time benefits eligible (at least 17.5 scheduled hours per week) to enroll in prescription plans. Members of the Campus Police Association must be scheduled to work 40 hours per week to be full-time benefits eligible.

Definitions
Generic drugs are FDA approved, medically equivalent drugs manufactured by a pharmaceutical company after the patent has expired on the original manufacturer's brand name medication. The prescription plans require that generic drugs be automatically substituted when available, as they are generally much less expensive. A penalty will apply if a generic is available but the pharmacy dispenses the brand name medication for any reason.
- Preferred drugs are brand name drugs deemed by the CVS Caremark Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee to be safe, clinically appropriate and cost effective.
- Non-Preferred drugs are brand name drugs that have preferred alternatives, and are typically more expensive.
- Specialty drugs are high-cost prescription medications used to treat complex, chronic conditions. They typically require special handling, administration or monitoring and must be filled through the .
