Research That Transforms Language Education
The Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition (ALSLA) provides students with a strong theoretical grounding in linguistics and cognitive psychology, paired with broad training in both qualitative and quantitative research methodology. Designed to develop independent and insightful researchers, the program equips students with the analytical and empirical tools needed to illuminate the processes of second language acquisition, use and maintenance. Through methodologically rigorous and conceptually innovative research, graduates will be prepared to make meaningful contributions to language education, policy and multilingual communities worldwide.

The application portal will open on September 1, 2025. All applicants who wish to be considered for fall 2026 entry must have submitted and completed all application materials by January 11, 2026.

Cross-Linguistics and Cross-Cultural Focus
Students will engage in research involving diverse linguistic and cultural settings. 麻豆村 requires advanced proficiency in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish or English as a Second Language.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
The program bridges cognitive sciences, linguistics, social sciences, cultural studies and education. Students collaborate with faculty across Carnegie Mellon’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Computer Science, as well as the University of Pittsburgh.
Research Apprenticeship Model
From the first year, students engage in faculty-mentored, hands-on research that builds toward independent scholarly work.
Individualized Course of Study
Each student follows a customized curriculum that builds on their background and interests, culminating in the dissertation.
