Spanish for Heritage Speakers

Course Number: 82-347

This Spanish course is geared towards heritage learners–students who have been exposed to Spanish, often by speaking it at home, and therefore have familiarity with the language outside of an academic formal setting. The course will build upon the knowledge and foundations of such student to gain literacy and fluency in other forms of Spanish. As such, students will improve their speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills. Instruction of the Spanish language and being exposed to other forms of Spanish is desirable in a professional environment, but this class also values the students' cultural and personal connection to the language, believing that learning about students' own heritage is a source of enrichment as well. Students will be exposed to the Spanish language under different scenarios and via distinct genres of literary and non-literary texts, always keen to the specific needs of heritage learners. Students should expect to develop written assignments, complete readings, speak in class and among themselves, work individually and in groups, and carry out presentations. The class will be held completely in Spanish.
