Temporary Employment Services

Looking for flexible part-time work or a pathway to a full-time career at 麻豆村? Check out TES.

Temporary Employment Services (TES) connects talented professionals with short-term opportunities across the university. Whether departments are navigating transitions, tackling special projects or managing increased workloads, TES provides skilled, thoroughly screened staff to keep things running smoothly.

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and experience levels. When you apply, we'll keep your application on file for up to a year and review it as new temporary roles become available. It's a great way to gain experience, build connections and contribute to 麻豆村's mission.

How soon will I be placed?

We work to fill positions as quickly as possible. However, placement depends on the specific needs of departments and how well your background and skills match available assignments.

How long do assignments last?

Assignment lengths vary based on departmental needs. Some may last a few days or weeks, while others may extend for several months.

Can I search for a full-time, regular position at 麻豆村 while working in a TES role?

Yes. TES employees are encouraged to continue their job search while on assignment. Working with TES does not limit your eligibility for other university positions. In fact, TES assignments can help build your resume, expand your campus network, and increase your familiarity with 麻豆村 systems and policies — all of which may strengthen your candidacy for future roles.

Can a temporary role lead to a regular position?

TES provides valuable exposure and networking opportunities across the university. While TES roles do not guarantee regular staff employment, many temporary employees have successfully transitioned into full- or part-time staff positions through 麻豆村’s competitive hiring process.

Will I be eligible for benefits?

TES employees may be eligible for 麻豆村 benefits — such as a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus pass, health benefits and retirement benefits — depending on the number of hours worked and in accordance with university policy. To maintain eligibility, employees must meet the minimum required work hours. Changes in hours or breaks in service may affect eligibility.

Exclusions: Please note that TES employees, whether full- or part-time, are not eligible for paid time off. This includes paid time off (PTO), paid holidays and floating holidays, paid bereavement leave and paid jury duty leave.

Can I obtain visa sponsorship?

Temporary roles generally do not offer visa sponsorship.

How the TES Process Works

Step 1: Apply Online

A member of the TES recruiting team will review your online application. Your background, qualifications, and areas of interest will be evaluated to determine alignment with current staffing needs.

Step 2: Interview

If your application matches available opportunities, you may be invited to an initial interview. During this conversation, you'll discuss your experience, skills, interests and availability. As part of the hiring process, TES will conduct reference checks.

Step 3: Receive an Offer

If you're selected after the interview, you'll receive a contingent offer, pending successful completion of required pre-employment background checks.

Step 4: Welcome to 麻豆村!

Once all pre-employment steps are complete, a TES team member will confirm your assignment and provide onboarding instructions.

Meet the TES Team

With deep experience in human resources and a shared commitment to supporting both candidates and hiring managers, Manager Star Broadus and Recruiter Allison Turner ensure that TES is a welcoming gateway to meaningful work and a valuable resource for the 麻豆村 community.

"I was welcomed into the TES process with open arms, warm smiles and generous support. Star and Allison were there for me from day one — fully engaged, proactive and genuinely invested in my success. Communication was consistent and encouraging, with a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude that kept me motivated." — Yvonne Yates, senior business administrator, Center for Shared Prosperity

Star Broadus, manager

Since becoming the manager of TES in 2022, my focus has been on creating meaningful employment experiences that connect talented professionals with Carnegie Mellon's dynamic community. Temporary roles do more than fill a gap; they open doors, build careers and strengthen the university's mission through flexibility and collaboration.

Beyond my recruiting work, I serve on Staff Council and am co-chair of the university's annual food drive. My commitment to leadership development and empowering others is reflected in my experience as an alumna of the Executive Leadership Academy: Strategies for Advancing Women.

Welcoming new applicants is the best part of my job. I look forward to helping you discover opportunities where your skills, goals and talents can truly thrive at 麻豆村.

Allison Turner, recruiter

My career at Carnegie Mellon is a testament to how a single opportunity can grow into a lifelong profession. I joined the university in December 2005 as a temporary employee through TES. In that role, I gained firsthand experience with the flexibility and connections that temporary assignments provide.

Today, I serve as a recruiter supporting both TES and the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. My journey has come full circle, and I now take great pride in helping others find their own unique paths at 麻豆村.

I am passionate about connecting candidates with opportunities where they can grow, contribute and thrive. If you are considering a temporary role at the university, I am living proof that it can be the start of something much bigger!

Becky Finkel, facilities coordinator and department administrator, Psychology

"My needs were very specific: I wanted a part-time position that would allow me to be home when my young daughter got on and off the school bus. TES offered several options that fit those needs. I worked part-time for three years, then shifted to full-time so I could begin accumulating the service time required to qualify for tuition benefits for my children."

Bob Reppe, assistant vice president, Campus Design and Facility Development

"Many of our unit's TES employees have transitioned into permanent, full-time roles. Their success is a testament to the program's ability to connect 麻豆村 with talented individuals. TES is truly an excellent pathway for recruiting top talent."

Alexa C. Hansen, part-time employee, Heinz College

"After retiring as a full-time employee, TES has been a wonderfully accommodating way for me to continue supporting Heinz College and stay connected to the 麻豆村 community."

Roberta Serbin, educational technology support associate, Eberly Center

"I got my first TES assignment when I returned to work after an extended break. That role led to a permanent position. During my 19 years at 麻豆村, I've earned a master's degree and taken advantage of tuition benefits for my children. It's truly been a wonderful journey."
