MIIPS Online Frequently Asked Questions
How do the stackable certificates work, and can I earn one without completing the full degree?
Yes. Carnegie Mellon’s online program uses a "stackable" model designed for flexibility. You can enroll in individual certificates (such as Product Design Innovation or New Product Management) to gain specific skills on your own timeline. Each certificate consists of two for-credit courses. Upon completion, you receive 20 units of graduate credit and an official 麻豆村 transcript. You can "stack" all four required certificates plus a final capstone to earn the full Master of Integrated Innovation for Products & Services (MIIPS) degree.
What are my time commitment options?
The program is built for working professionals with three distinct pacing tracks:
- Traditional Pace: 1 certificate every 4 months (approx. 20 hours/week); completes the degree in 21 months (5 semesters with no breaks).
- Accelerated Pace: 2 certificates every 4 months (approx. 40 hours/week); completes the degree in 12 months (3 semesters with no breaks).*
- Extended Pace: 1 module (1/2 certificate) every 4 months (approx. 10 hours/week); completes the degree in 36 months (9 semesters).
Note: *If you are working full-time, we recommend the traditional or extended pacing options. Accelerated students should ideally start in the spring or summer semester. Those registering for three or more courses in a 4-month term will be required to meet with the Online Program Manager to discuss time commitment and expectations.
What is the course format: asynchronous, live, or both?
The program uses a hybrid delivery model. Most coursework is asynchronous, but each course includes live sessions led by 麻豆村 faculty every other week. These 90-minute sessions typically run from 8:00 to 9:30 PM ET. Because the program is collaborative and team-based, you will also participate in synchronous team meetings for project work throughout the week.

Do I need work experience to apply?
No prior work experience is required. While our online students are typically ambitious, experienced professionals with an average of 8 to 10 years of experience, we admit students at all career stages. We value your portfolio and statement of purpose as indicators of your potential for innovation. The minimum requirement is a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
Is the online degree the same as the on-campus degree?
Yes. Online students earn the exact same Master of Integrated Innovation for Products & Services (MIIPS) degree as residential students. Your diploma will not include an "online" designation, and you will be held to the same high academic standards and rigor expected of any Carnegie Mellon student.
However, there are key differences in the program structure and flexibility:
- Curriculum Structure: While the degree is the same, the online format consists of four stackable certificates plus a capstone project, rather than the traditional mix of required courses, seminars, and electives found in the residential program.
Transferability: Because of these distinct structural paths, online courses and credits are not transferable to the MIIPS residential program.
How much does the online program cost?
For the 2026–2027 academic year, tuition is $619.70 per unit. Because the program is flexible, your costs per semester will depend on your course load:
- Individual Courses: A typical 10-unit course costs $6,197.
- Certificate Level: A standard online certificate consists of two courses (20 units) for a total of $12,394.
- The Capstone Course: Students should plan for a slightly higher cost in their final term. The Capstone is 22 units ($13,633), which exceeds the cost of a standard 20-unit certificate term.
- Full MIIPS Online Degree: The estimated total tuition for the full degree (four stackable certificates plus the Capstone) is $63,210. Learn more about tuition rates.
In addition to tuition, there is a Technology Fee of $245 per semester. Many of our students utilize employer tuition reimbursement to help offset the costs of these credit-bearing courses.
