Title: Data and Analytics at Utilities – Background, Current State, Use Cases
Date: 14 January, 2026
Time: 12:30 PM
Location: 4110 Wean Hall and via Zoom
Abstract
This talk will be focused on the current state environment of a typical electric utility in terms of their data and analytics, using FirstEnergy as a specific backdrop. I’ll give a brief history of FirstEnergy as an entity up to present day, how that’s informed the current state of our data, and what we are doing to transform that going forward. From there exemplary use cases will be described in the fields of Vegetation, Customer Service, and Distribution systems that FirstEnergy has targeted currently or in the recent past. This will illustrate current efforts and challenges utilities are engaged in responding to changing expectations and technology. You’ll come away from this talk with a better understanding of the internal data and analytics realities of electric utilities to better inform research considerations.
