Tartans Abroad Scholarship

Group Scholarship for Short-Term Experiences Abroad

Tartans Abroad Group Scholarships are for recognized Carnegie Mellon undergraduate student groups to pursue short-term organized international travel during academic break periods including the summer, winter break and spring break.

Scholarship funds may be used for:

  • Program fees and related travel expenses

  • Shared costs associated with structured, educational group travel abroad

1. Student Organization Affiliation

  • The group must be a recognized undergraduate Carnegie Mellon Student Organization or program with an Oracle String

  • Faculty-led programs are typically not considered under the Group Fund

 2. Short term, Academic-Break Travel

  • Group trips must occur during a 麻豆村 academic break period (summer, winter break or spring break)

  • Programs must fall entirely within the 麻豆村 academic calendar. Programs that overlap with the start of a semester are not eligible.

 3. Trip Roster and Application Requirements

  • Applications must include a complete roster or all students participating  (name, college, and year)

  • Only complete applications will be considered. A complete application includes:

Application cover sheet 
Complete trip roster 
Detailed budget proposal (template provided)
Group essay 
One letter of recommendation 

  • All participants in the group trip must attend a Pre-Departure Orientation Session hosted by the Office of International Education (OIE)
  • All participants must complete all 麻豆村 Required Forms and pre-departure registration materials 
  • As a condition of accepting the Tartans Abroad Scholarship, all participants agree to participate in a showcase presentation about the trip after they return to campus
Note: Scholarship funds will not be disbursed until all pre-departure requirements are met.

Application Instructions

  • Application Cover Sheet (Page 1)
  • A fully completed Trip Roster (Page 2)
  • Budget proposal using the provided template on Page 3.
  • Group Essay (minimum 1 page) addressing:
    • Why the group chose this particular experience abroad.
    • What the group expects to learn and how the experience will enhance your academic and/or co-curricular education at 麻豆村
    • How the group plans to engage with the host community and establish meaningful connections.
  • One (1) Letter of Recommendation 
    • The letter can be from a 麻豆村 faculty member, advisor, student affairs representative, department head or college dean. 
    • The letter should be submitted directly to OIE at goabroad@andrew.cmu.edu or included in a sealed envelope with the group’s application materials.
    • Letters must be received by the application deadline.

Complete applications may be submitted: 

  • In person at the OIE front desk (Cyert Hall Suite 101) The OIE front desk is open from 9:00AM - 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, except for Thursdays, when we close at 3:30 PM.

  • By email to goabroad@andrew.cmu.edu by 11:59 PM on the deadline 

Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted for any reason. You must submit all components of the application, including a letter of recommendation, prior to the deadline for your application to be considered. Annual Deadlines:

  • Winter Break: November 15 (by 11:59 PM) 
  • Spring Break: January 31 (by 11:59 PM)
  • Summer Break: March 31 (by 11:59 PM)

Note: Preference will be given to students who have not previously had a study or travel abroad experience and have not previously received a Tartans Abroad Scholarship.
