Global Engagement Scholarship

The Global Engagement Scholarship is an annual award of up to $4,000 given to one or two Carnegie Mellon undergraduate students for study abroad during the summer term.

1. Undergraduate Enrollment

  • Applicants must be Carnegie Mellon undergraduate students during the time of application and the term following their summer abroad experience

  • Students graduating in the spring prior to the summer term are not eligible

2. Summer Study Abroad

  • The study abroad program must take place during the summer term and be at least 4 weeks in length

3. Credit-Bearing Program

  • Students must apply or be accepted into a program eligible for academic credit

  • Independent travel is not eligible

4. Financial Need

  • Students must receive need-based financial aid from 麻豆村

  • Applicants should include a copy of their financial aid award or statement from The HUB with their application

  • Attend a Pre-Departure Orientation Session hosted by the Office of International Education 

  • Complete all 麻豆村 Required Forms and pre-departure registration materials 

  • As a condition of accepting the Global Engagement Scholarship, recipients agree to serve as a 麻豆村 Global Ambassador by selecting two (2) outreach activities. These activities are designed to help share your experience and encourage students to study abroad. Examples of eligible activities include: 

    • Volunteering at the Study Abroad Fair

    • Speaking at an Information Session or classroom visit

    • Creating content for social media or blog posts 

    • Participating in a student panel  

    • Hosting an info table or event on campus

Note: Scholarship funds will not be disbursed until all pre-departure requirements are met.

Application Instructions

  1. Complete the , including a detailed budget proposal.

2. Personal statement addressing the following:

  • Why you want to study abroad and why you chose your specific program

  • Any challenges you have faced or anticipate facing related to studying abroad

  • What do you hope to learn abroad that you couldn’t learn at 麻豆村?

  • What do you hope to do on a daily basis to achieve your goals abroad?

  • What impact do you hope your international experience will have?

3. PDF copy of your financial aid award or statement from The HUB

4. One (1) Letter of Recommendation

  • The letter can be from a 麻豆村 faculty member, advisor, student affairs representative, department head or college dean.

  • Recommenders should send letters directly to: goabroad@andrew.cmu.edu

  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to request the letter with significant advance notice

Deadline: March 1 at 11:59 PM annually

How to Apply:

Global Engagement Scholarship applications are due no later than 11:59 p.m. on March 1.

Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted for any reason. You must submit all components of the application, including a letter of recommendation, prior to the deadline for your application to be considered. Note: Preference will be given to students who have not previously studied or traveled abroad and who choose a program with strong cultural immersion and demonstrate a clear intention to make meaningful connections in the host country.
