Understanding the New F-1 and J-1 Duration of Status Rule

A United States District Court Judge issued a nationwide temporary preliminary injunction Sept. 14 that pauses the D/S rule from going into effect on Sept. 15, 2026, while consideration of the lawsuit continues. 

Join the Office of International Education (OIE) Monday, Aug. 31, 2026 at 4:30 p.m. (EDT), for a town hall meeting on the upcoming  for students and scholars in F-1 and J-1 immigration status. The new rule takes effect Sept. 15, 2026.

OIE staff will provide an overview of the changes, explain what they may mean for students and scholars — including new requirements and restrictions related to authorized periods of stay, maintaining status and academic mobility — and answer questions from the community. You'll learn what’s changing, what to expect and how these changes may impact you.
