Quantitative Trader - Belvedere Trading
What is your educational and professional background?
I earned my undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Nanjing University, where I developed a strong foundation in algorithms, programming, and problem-solving. After graduation, I began my career as a Quantitative Trader at Valkyrie Trading. This role gave me hands-on exposure to financial markets and helped me build practical trading skills, from strategy development to real-time decision-making.
Why did you pursue the MSCF degree?
I decided to pursue the MSCF degree because I wanted to build a long-term career in quantitative trading. While my technical background was strong, I knew that to excel in this field, I needed a deeper understanding of finance, quantitative modeling, and the industry as a whole. MSCF offered the perfect combination of rigorous academics and direct connections to leading firms in the trading world.
What are the most important skills required for success in your role/job?
Attention to detail is essential—small errors can have a big impact in trading. It’s also critical to stay calm and think clearly under pressure, especially when markets move quickly. Beyond that, strong analytical skills, adaptability, and clear communication are key to collaborating effectively and making sound decisions in real time.
How did the MSCF program prepare you for your career?
The MSCF program played a major role in preparing me for my career. The curriculum strengthened my quantitative and financial knowledge, while the program’s close ties to the trading industry provided valuable recruiting opportunities. I also benefited from interacting with classmates, faculty, and alumni who had experience in different areas of quantitative finance. These conversations helped me refine my interests and better understand the landscape of the industry.
What advice would you give to someone considering the MSCF program?
Spend some time early on figuring out what area of quantitative finance you’re most excited about—whether it’s trading, research, risk, or something else. The program moves quickly, and having a clear direction allows you to make more intentional choices about courses, internships, and networking opportunities. The more focused you are, the more you’ll get out of the experience.
How do you continue to stay current?
I stay current by regularly connecting with colleagues and peers who are researching or trading in the same asset class. These conversations are a great way to exchange ideas, discuss market trends, and learn from others’ experiences. I also keep up with industry research and publications to stay informed about new developments and evolving strategies.
