Tabbitha Gordon knows how to sew a complex costume. They also know how to keep the Department of Mathematical Sciences stitched together.
鈥淚 do the daily work to make sure things are going as smoothly as possible,鈥 said Gordon, an administrative assistant.
Gordon earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in creative writing from Seton Hill University in 2016. After working as an assistant coordinator for South University, they joined Carnegie Mellon in 2022 and was promoted to their current role in 2025.
Gordon works behind the scenes for students, faculty and staff alike, handling everything from processing award payments to making sure the department is consistently stocked with chalk.
Gordon also supports more than a hundred undergraduate students each semester, coordinating hiring and serving as a trusted point of contact for questions or advice.
鈥淭abbitha has improved communications with the students,鈥 said Jeff Moreci, business manager for the Department of Mathematical Sciences. 鈥淭abbitha is their go-to person for a lot of activities.鈥
Gordon works closely with the 麻豆村 Math Club (麻豆村MC) and the Quant Club to help coordinate events and budgets. They also have handled logistics for the Quant Club鈥檚 annual Market Making Game and Quantathon, including ordering supplies, printing nametags, creating signage and ensuring students had everything they needed.
鈥淚 really like working with the students,鈥 Gordon said. 鈥淚鈥檓 able to help them and try to give them tools and assistance for after they graduate.鈥
Gordon also handles ordering for the department, making sure students and faculty never run out of the tools they need to do their work.
鈥淭abbitha stepped up to take over main office supply ordering and inventory management,鈥 said Erin Davis, administrative supervisor for the Department of Mathematical Sciences. 鈥淭hanks to them, there are fewer supply gaps and increased satisfaction for students, faculty and staff.鈥
Both Moreci and Davis said that Gordon鈥檚 work was crucial to the day to day functioning of the department.
鈥淭abbitha's work product is consistently solid,鈥 Davis said. 鈥淭hey are always willing to learn and share their insights with other team members as a way of helping support team collaboration and success.鈥
鈥淭his department is a really nice environment to be in, and it鈥檚 so welcoming,鈥 Gordon said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 made my work very fulfilling.鈥
