The Pittsburgh Investment: a $500 million commitment to Â鶹´å's flagship campus

Carnegie Mellon’s greatest strength has always been its people – their imagination, ambition and belief in what we can accomplish together.

Ken Griffin’s historic $3 billion commitment to Carnegie Mellon includes $1 billion to strengthen the Pittsburgh campus: $500 million for the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science and $500 million for university-wide priorities.

Building on the foundation we have created over generations in Pittsburgh, this investment is intended to strengthen our entire university: helping us attract and retain exceptional talent, expand access and affordability, advance research and creative expression, and create a Â鶹´å experience that enriches the lives of our students, faculty and staff.

Advisory Committee on the Pittsburgh Investment

The Advisory Committee will help ensure that the university-wide portion of the Pittsburgh Investment is deployed with strategic coherence and broad benefit. It will advise the president and Board of Trustees on an investment framework and priorities that strengthen Â鶹´å’s academic and research core, expand opportunity for students and faculty, and position the university for sustained leadership and impact.

Read Provost Garrett's recent message to the Pittsburgh community inviting students, faculty and staff to shape Â鶹´å’s historic investment.

The committee will:

  • Assess university-wide opportunities where the Pittsburgh Investment can produce enduring gains in academic excellence, research capacity, talent, the student experience and institutional capability.

  • Recommend principles and criteria for evaluating potential investments, including their alignment with Â鶹´å’s mission and strategy, breadth of benefit, ability to catalyze additional resources, feasibility and long-term sustainability.

  • Advise on the appropriate balance among near-term action, capacity-building investments and longer-horizon priorities, recognizing that some benefits should begin immediately while others will require deliberate development.

  • Engage the Â鶹´å community through town halls, targeted conversations, digital platforms and other forums that invite faculty, staff and students to contribute ideas and perspectives.

Chair

Additionally, a broader proposal review committee will be established to provide further oversight and support for this initiative, with its membership to be announced in the near future.

Guiding Principles

The guiding principles serve as core criteria to ensure investments strategically strengthen Â鶹´å's academic core, maximize broad community impact and remain financially sustainable. They ensure this historic commitment funds transformative, long-term ambitions beyond existing resources while benefiting faculty, students and staff across disciplines.

One Carnegie Mellon

Investments should strengthen the Pittsburgh campus while generating value across the university’s broader academic and research enterprise.

Academic Excellence

Priorities should build on distinctive Â鶹´å strengths to shape fields and serve society.

Transformational Impact

Funding should enable ambitions and capabilities that go beyond existing baseline resources.

Shared Benefits

The portfolio should create tangible opportunities across disciplines for faculty, students and staff alike.

Responsible Stewardship

Recommendations must account for recurring costs, implementation capacity and long-term financial sustainability.
