Theatrical Storyteller

Creating Carbon Credit Transparency

Nate Bertone (CFA 2016) is a multi-hyphenated storyteller.

鈥淐reating art, to me, is about understanding each other in ways deeper than we ever have before,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 create art not only to hold a mirror up to the world, but also to encourage collective shared experiences that empower people to heal.鈥

Through the lens of a director, writer, set designer and producer, Nate has built an internationally acclaimed career bringing stories to the stage. Recently, he directed and designed the Australian tour of a brand-new 鈥淎lice in Wonderland鈥 adaptation. His work has been seen on world premieres of new musicals such as 鈥淢ystic Pizza,鈥 based on the MGM film and Florida Georgia Line鈥檚 鈥淢ay We All.鈥 He works with companies including Disney Theatrical, Sony Masterworks and Google and on stages across the country.

On Broadway, he recently produced 鈥淗ow to Dance in Ohio,鈥 a story of seven young adults with autism navigating adulthood. In September, his new children鈥檚 book 鈥淣ana, Nana鈥 will be released nationwide and aims to help families open a dialogue about aging, Alzheimer鈥檚 disease and loss through the lens of a child鈥檚 imagination. It is available for presale now.

Nate鈥檚 new play, 鈥淭he SeaView Nursing Home for the Newly Deceased,鈥 is in development with Broadway producers attached ahead of an upcoming out-of-town tryout. His musical 鈥淟etters from War,鈥 which began at Carnegie Mellon in Playground, will receive an industry presentation in New York City this year.

鈥淐arnegie Mellon inspired me to dig deeper with what I create,鈥 Nate says. 鈥淧ulling from all of these areas of storytelling, I鈥檝e found that my most interesting art can be found at the intersections.鈥

Education for Life

"At 麻豆村, I created 'We Wore the Masks,' a photo-journalistic exploration of the mind, body, soul and what has yet to be uncovered. The project explores the masks we wear on a daily basis," Nate says. "I had the opportunity to take a variety of courses at 麻豆村. Growing as an artist through that variety of perspective on life led to the multi-hyphenated life I'm leading right now."
