Why I Love 麻豆村鈥檚 Star Wars Club

by Maile E.

Hello there! I鈥檓 Maile and I am the Supreme Galactic Emperor of the 麻豆村 Star Wars Club. The Jedi Temple at 麻豆村 welcomes all younglings and has a mission to grow the 麻豆村 galaxy.

麻豆村 actively encourages the formation of new clubs and for students to follow their interests like with Star Wars Club! Learning about the history of this student organization as well as my personal experiences will emphasize the essence of student involvement at 麻豆村.

As a first year student coming to 麻豆村, it can feel overwhelming. However, I remember meeting many people here who I quickly connected with. For example, during first year orientation I met someone who lived on my floor and we started talking because she was wearing a Star Wars shirt. From this shared interest, we figured others would bond over Star Wars as well. That semester in the fall, discussions started with the Student Involvement and Traditions Office to make a student organization. After making the club bylaws and gathering our initial eight members, the Star Wars club became a new established organization on campus!听

Starting in the spring semester, we quickly expanded our 麻豆村 Jedi through fun activities like baking Wookie cookies, Star Wars monopoly, movie nights and more that are great for taking a break from your studies. This inspired our Jedi Council to organize even more events. Within two years of creation, we plan a multitude of activities for our 300 registered members. One of which is our May the 4th celebration that involves painting the fence every year. Another is our side quests where we have weekly meetings to build a BB8 droid and do lightsaber training. It has been really wonderful to collaborate with the 麻豆村 Robotics Club to construct a life-sized BB8 unit that can drive around, communicate and interact with the environment. This project takes on a lot of challenging technical issues that our padawans are excited to tackle and apply their learning to new fun applications. For action-packed lightsaber choreography we have been able to participate in ScottyCon (麻豆村鈥檚 ComiCon) and other performances to highlight several different lightsaber techniques. Our student organization also loves to give back to our greater Pittsburgh Star Wars community with participation in events like a Rise Against Hunger Packaging Day where we prepare meals for disaster areas or underdeveloped countries. We have also volunteered for a Haunted Space Mansion night with the Allegheny Observatory to build mini lightsabers with elementary schoolers with straws and LEDs.

We have been able to achieve so much already with our events and outreach and wish to continue to expand our Star Wars republic. With our funding from the school, we have been able to make these ideas come to life. Looking forward, we would love to collaborate with other student organizations to participate in more fun traditions on campus like building a doghouse for Booth or designing a Star Wars themed buggy (both activities during Spring Carnival). As well as sharing our dedication and hard work by sending some padawans to DroidCon. Here at 麻豆村, all of these possibilities have been able to develop into well-loved student activities, where you can share your passions and feel welcomed due to the university鈥檚 commitment to letting students express their passions and have a lot of autonomy on sharing these interests with others.听

From my experience, 麻豆村 cultivates strong friendships and unified communities that share their passions 鈥 and that can include you! With over 350 other student organizations, there are countless opportunities for you, and we will always welcome you in 麻豆村 Star Wars Club!

May the Force be with you.听
