Discover the Art Pass Program

by Edie H.

Hi! I鈥檓 Edie, a second-year student at 麻豆村 majoring in business and statistics (machine learning track) and minoring in math. I want to share some tips on taking full advantage of the Arts Pass Program! The Carnegie Mellon Arts Pass program gives students free or discounted access to a variety of museums, galleries and cultural events in Pittsburgh, and I鈥檝e found it to be a fantastic way to explore art, history and culture. Whether you鈥檙e a seasoned art enthusiast or just looking for a relaxing way to spend an afternoon, there鈥檚 something for everyone. Since many of the free access establishments are just a walk away from campus, I have enjoyed popping in for a quick visit in between lectures. I love staying in touch with art through museums because visiting galleries and exhibits help me relax in between my busy course load.听

One of the first things I learned is to check the galleries regularly, since exhibitions rotate frequently. Even if you visited last month, you鈥檒l likely see something new on your next visit. I also love that the galleries are thematically organized, and the curators include little notes explaining why certain pieces are on display. It鈥檚 fascinating to read their perspective. Right now, there鈥檚 an exhibit on colonialism, and one of my favorite paintings on display is the Toilet of Venus. I also recommend taking advantage of docent tours, which run on weekdays from 1鈥2 p.m. and on Thursdays at 6 p.m., leaving from the main entrance. These tours are a great way to learn more about the artwork and engage with the museum in a deeper way.听

Going with friends can make the experience even more enjoyable. Sharing thoughts on artwork can spark great conversations and help you get to know each other better. On the other hand, visiting solo is perfect for some chill, reflective time away from coursework. One of my favorite parts of the Arts Pass is that it also includes admission to the Carnegie Natural History Museum, which is connected to the art galleries. It鈥檚 an easy way to explore both art and science in one trip.听

Overall, the Arts Pass Program has become a fun part of my routine at 麻豆村. With rotating exhibitions, thematic galleries with curator insights, guided tours and access to multiple museums, such as the Andy Warhol downtown, and the modern art museum Mattress Factory, it鈥檚 a simple way to make the most of your time in Pittsburgh. Whether you鈥檙e going with friends or taking a solo adventure, there鈥檚 always something new to discover.
