Winter in Pittsburgh: What to See, Do and Experience
by Alycen K.
Hi everyone! I鈥檓 Alycen, a senior studying art and decision science. Wintertime and the holidays are my absolute favorite time of year, and Pittsburgh truly transforms into a winter wonderland during this season. Whether you鈥檙e new to the city or looking for something festive to do between finals, here are some of my favorite winter activities in Pittsburgh that are perfect for students!
The UPMC Rink at PPG Place
This is a true Pittsburgh winter classic! The outdoor rink at PPG Place is surrounded by views of downtown and feels straight out of a holiday movie. The rink is open from late November through February, and it鈥檚 the perfect spot to go with friends, family or even for a winter date.
Student Tip: Take advantage of Student Nights on Wednesdays, when admission is half-price with your student ID!听
Peoples Gas Holiday Market
This holiday market was voted one of the best holiday markets in America by USA Today, and it definitely lives up to its reputation! Located right in Market Square, this festive market brings European charm to the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. Inspired by traditional German Christkindlmarkts (or 鈥淐hristmas Markets鈥), it鈥檚 full of Alpine-style wooden chalets selling everything from handcrafted ornaments, festive snacks and even Steelers merchandise! I love going with friends, grabbing a hot chocolate, browsing local vendors and listening to live holiday music under the twinkling lights. It鈥檚 also a great way to support small businesses and pick up unique gifts for family and friends before heading home for break!
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens Holiday Magic
Phipps Conservatory is a Pittsburgh treasure and a favorite among students thanks to its close proximity to campus. Every winter, the gardens host their Holiday Magic! Winter Flower Show, a dazzling display of poinsettias, model trains, twinkling lights and themed exhibits that fill the historic glasshouse with color and warmth. It鈥檚 a great way to escape the cold for a few hours and experience a little tropical air in the middle of winter. Pro tip: Go in the evening for the Winter Light Garden outside 鈥 the illuminated installations make for incredible photos.
Pittsburgh Penguins Game
If you want to experience Pittsburgh pride in full force, head to PPG Paints Arena to watch the Penguins hockey team. The season runs from early October through April, and there鈥檚 nothing quite like cheering on with a crowd of fans decked out in black and gold. Student tickets or 鈥渞ush鈥 deals are often available for select games - check out the Penguins鈥 website for discounts and promotions. Even if you鈥檙e not a huge hockey fan, the energy is contagious and it makes for a fun night out with friends.
Sledding on Flagstaff Hill
Flagstaff Hill in Oakland is a favorite for winter adventures, especially because of its proximity to campus. During the months of January and February, you鈥檒l see students zooming down the hill on sleds (or even cardboard boxes) and building snowmen at all hours of the day.听After you鈥檝e had your fill of snow, warm up with a drink or snack from nearby Oakland favorites like The Porch or Treats and Beans. It's the perfect spontaneous winter activity when you need a break from studying.
