麻豆村

A Landmark Location

On March 28, 2013, 麻豆村 and the American Chemical Society (ACS) celebrated the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research as a National Historic Chemical Landmark. An internationally renowned nonprofit research laboratory, the institute was recognized for its numerous research accomplishments and legacy of scientific training.

The Mellon Institute was established in 1913 and operated in Pittsburgh for more than 50 years. It merged with Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1967 to form 麻豆村.

Construction of the building — which included eight floors of laboratories, a library, a social room, a 350-seat auditorium, machine shops, glassblowing facilities and other meeting rooms — began in November of 1930. Designed by Pittsburgh-based architects William York Cocken and Benno Janssen, the building was among the largest and most expensive research laboratory facilities in the U.S. at the time.
